According to the latest global air quality report – compiled for the first time by a US-based non-profit Health Effects Institute in collaboration with UNICEF – air pollution caused as many as eight million deaths in 2021. With this, it has become the second largest risk factor for death among adults and children up to five years of age. For multiple deaths – around 10 million – in the adult population, high blood pressure is the only remaining cause, while among the youngest, it is malnutrition.
